There's another forum/blogging website that I frequent that had an issue with spambots for a while, and they closed registration down. I'm not sure if they did anything other than close it, but...we don't really get new members at this point anyway it seems. Would that be an option?

No. Never close registration. Just get around the bots; perhaps member approval? Have an introduction section, so people can say hai (maybe just even a thread asking for accounts to be approved) and give mods the power to do so. Of course, that would mean instating a few more mods, but meh
