What are your 5 favorite video games of all time?

Simple and enjoyable thread now in 2.0! Obviously we know a few games that will be on everyones list :travis. Also provide a little write up of why each game is your favorite?

#5. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004)
This still remains the best GTA to date. Everything about it is perfect. The three distinctly themed cities to represent Vegas, East LA and San Fran. They also NAILED the era just as well as GTA: Vice City. The story in this one is actually pretty good too! I've easily played this GTA way more than other installments.

#4. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004)
I've never seen a game pull off the atmosphere in a game so well to this day. The time is the 1960's in the cold war, you're an american agent and you're in the jungle. You must eat the animals around to survive, and use camouflage to hide from the enemies. Seriously this game could replace the top 3 spots at any point for me. The gameplay and story from an MGS game is top notch, and the third installment is sometimes referred to s "the best MGS". I've easily beaten this game 100+ times.

#3. Halo CE (2001)
Pretty obvious this would be on the list. I remember being in 2nd grade and going to my friends house for a sleep over. When I got there I was told his mom had gone out to purchase an Xbox for us. She was also told to buy a little game called Halo. From then on I was playing at least one level of H1 campaign a day, and signing in my extra controllers and killing them in multiplayer when I was playing by myself at my house.

#2. Halo 2 (2004)
Again, a pretty obvious choice. H2 was the first game I had ever played online. Without this game I wouldn't be posting this thread, or even on this website. It's fairly obvious why this sits at #2

#1. Metal Gear Solid (1999)
If I had to choose one game to live with the rest of my life, it would be this one. I still remember being a 5 year old playing the demo of this game that was on a Pizza Hut demo disc. This game remains my favorite because every time I play it, I have fun no matter what. The story, the gameplay everything in this game is absolutely timeless. I wouldn't even know how to count how many times this was beaten.

Honorable Mention: Tony Hawk's Underground (2003)
I'm honesty not sure why I love this game so much. It was the first time they shoved story into a Tony Hawk game. Tony Hawk games were alway extremely fun. This game captured the story of one skater from jersey making it to pro status. If theres one Tony Hawk game that deserves re release after THPS1, it's this one.

#5. NCAA Football 2007 / FIFA 2001 (PS2)
Never had more fun playing sports games than playing these two with friends. Specifically running the option-based offense with Kansas State's fast QB in NCAA and Rainbowing over sliding goalies in FIFA. Feels like every year after these that I bought sports games was only an attempt to recreate this fun.

#4. Downhill Domination (PS2)
Kind of a cheesy, glitchy game. But super fun all the while. You could pretty much build up point meters doing tricks while downhill racing and then earn sticks to hit other rides with, or my personal favorite... empty bottles to throw at opponents.

#3. Halo 3 (Xbox 360)
So many hours.

#2. Mario Tennis (Gameboy Color)
The only gameboy game I ever played more than pokemon. Maybe it was because of my age at the time, but even though this game was highly repetitive the challenge of beating it made it so fun. Ranking up your characters stats and then playing through the tennis school and finally going to play in a tournament with all the mario characters. 'Twas badass. Years later I played the gamecube one too, but I only ever tried it once. Seemed fun, but I can't really speak to it much.

#1. Halo 2 (Xbox)
Gaming-wise there's probably nothing I wish more than wishing I'd had the opportunity to be around in the prime of this. The game is amazing and I have fun every single time I play it. The opportunity to play this game with live support was the one reason I really, really considered getting MCC (which I ended up not doing.) <3

Honorable Mention: Mercenaries Playground of Destruction
I don't think I really put in the hours to call this game one of my top 5, but wow was it fun to run around blowing shit up. This was definitely the first open-world style game I owned since GTA was not going to fly in my household growing up.

My "OH SHIT I FORGOT THIS" edit: Geometry Wars Evolved 2 (XBLA)
This game was so freakin' fun. Back in high school we would just get baked and play this game all the time. It's so entrancing, beautiful colors and intense soundtrack. I miss it. Since I don't have an Xbox with me I got the iOS version a while back, but controlling for such a precision game with the touch screen phone just doesn't work at all, the glory is lost. I also recently saw they released a third version of this game for PS4 this year. I can only imagine the greatness...

I don't think I can rank these, but I'll just list em, also fuck you sometimes I can't decide which one to choose so I say a series.

Mario Party 1-6

I can't even tell you how many nights I've spent playing this drunk/high with my friends. It's unreal how I couldn't ever get tired of these games. When I was a kid playing on the N64 I used to actually just give myself 9 stars to start and then play it through when there was no way I could lose. Giving myself that handicap removes the competitive aspect of it and I still would play it over and over, so that should tell you something.

Ratchet and Clank 1-4

Easily the most time I've spent on PS2 was playing these. Just beating them over and over, ranking up the weapons, trying to get like a billion bolts to max out how much the game would let me have was amazing. Everything about these games was great and the replay value is off the charts.

Halo 2

yea yea whatever

League of Legends

Spent easily over 2 thousand hours on this game over the past couple years, so that speaks for itself.

Iggy's Reckin' Balls

I still don't think I've met someone who remembers this game, but it was one of, if not my favorite N64 game ever. I also liked how the game was kinda hard and the "skill cap" was really high so I would always be able to get better. Haven't played this in forever though.

Honorables: SSX Tricky, Donkey Kong 64, Madden 2004 and Blitz 2000

I can only place 3 of 5:

  1. Mortal Kombat 1 (2, and UMK3, as well)
  2. Halo 1 (and 2, of course but CE when compared)
  3. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Other favorites for various reasons:

  • Madden 2005
  • NHL 2009
  • Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003
  • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (and 2; most recently the HD rerelease)
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee
  • Zombies! Ate My Neighbors

This'll do for now, I might expand later. I dig the thread, Doodle.

Halo 1/2

Metro 2033/Last Light

Fallout 3/New Vegas

Elder Scrolls

Pokemon Gen 1/2

Halo CE

Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back

Fallout 3

Borderlands 2

Tony Hawk's Underground

#5 WET (2009): Honestly because main character female is pretty badass and gorgeous. Not to mention it was addicting killing people with her types of weapons she had and carried on her. Especially enjoyed her sword combinations and shotgun killing techniques.

#4 Halo Reach (2010): I enjoy the storyline within the campaign and love playing it from time to time when I can. I especially love playing the "Living Dead" playlist having that shotgun and killing others with it is quite enjoyable especially if your getting a shotgun killing spree going on also enjoy "Big Team Battle" as well from time to time.

#3 Halo 4 (2012): It's an interesting storyline through the campaign but these days I barely play it, I'm mostly roaming the playlists in the War Games menu. It can be addicting from time to time, my top playlist favorites will always be Heavies and Big Team Infinity Slayer the occasion SWAT on the side if I'm bored from the other two.

#2 Modern Warfare 3 (2011): I regret selling it but I loved the storyline and the online multiplayer it has. It was addicting and although I wasn't as good in it I enjoyed the many playlists it had from time to time.

#1 Mario 64 (1996): I know I jumped way back on the spectrum but I loved playing it as a kid and still play it when I can get my hands on it. I was just always fascinated by how he could jump into the different worlds and collect the stars doing different tasks he had to accomplish each time he had to jump into the those worlds. It was just so damn fascinated. I so regret selling my N64 back in middle school because I've been itching to play it for quite a long time now. I think it'll always be number one honestly.

5. Garry's Mod: I think I had the most fun times in gaming on this game. Me and my friends could play this for hours

4. Syphon Filter 2: one of the first shooters I ever played. My favorite PS1 game

3. Halo 2: I got h2 at the end of 06 so I only really had a year to play before halo 3 came out but for the time I had it I had an absolute blast. I remember foundation zombies and tower of power all the time.

2. Half Life 2: first game I got when I got the Xbox original and my favorite campaign of all time. If theres one game I need its Half Life 3

1. Halo 3: although it may of not been the best halo it's definitely my favorite. I put so much time into this game it's ridiculous. Halo 3 was literally my life from 08-10.

HM: Spyro the Dragon
Oblivion
Amnesia The Dark Descent
WoW

#5 - SSX Tricky

#4 - Tony Hawk series (I played one a lot more than the others but I can't remember which because it's been 10+ years since I played it)

#3 - Star Wars Battlefront 2

I don't think I even came close to beating any of those games but I played them a SHIT TON regardless. I have very high hopes for the DICE Battlefront reboot.

#2 - Call of Duty 4

#1 - Halo 3

My first online multiplayer games. Up until I got my 360, I was primarily a solo gamer, and these were the two games I played with my school friends for years. I played both of these games religiously. I'm really hoping for a remastered version of COD4.

HM:

CS 1.6

Super Mario Sunshine

The Last of Us

Battlefield 3

Holy fuck SSX Tricky was such a good game.

Lol,  I was scrolling through thinking that same thing XYOX. Good pick Savagr.

1.) Bioshock Infinite

2.) Bioshock

3.) Batman: Arkham City

4.) Red Dead Redemption

5.) The Last of Us

Banjo Kazooie

Paper Mario

Starcraft II

Dark souls

Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

Nostalgia is too strong. Starcraft II I've put in well over a thousand hours in both Ranked and unranked games. Custom games, TD, Dota style games, maze games, etc along with being one of the most competitive games out there at the moment. Dark souls because the replay factor is too good.  I'm sure I could post more games but these are the 5 I've at least spent the most time playing :)

  • Diablo 1
  • Halo CE
  • Turok Rage Wars
  • Crash Bandicoot 1&2
  • Paper Mario

I've been meaning to post some top 5/10 whenever one of these threads has been posted over the years. Well, those 5 are what I immediately thought of a couple of hours ago. Basically what I played with friends/revolved around multiplayer. Different genres and almost forgotten games are already rushing into my head, but I'll stick with this for now.

Special times with (no order):

  • Conker's Bad Fur Day
  • Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War
  • Mario Party 1-4
  • Super Smash Bros. 64
  • Halo 2

Getting too long already. I'll try to write up a lil something, for the top 5 at least, later.

Twilight Princess

Halo 1 and 2

Pokemon R/B/Y and G/S/C

Turok N64

Golden Eye N64

Halo 2

Mario Kart N64

Sonic The Hedgehog Sega

1. Halo CE

2. Gears of War

3. Cod 2

4. Mario Partys/Karts

5. Diablo 2: LoD

HMs: Halo 2/3. League of legends. OoT, Goldeneye, Starcrat BW/2

0) MASS EFFECT TRILOGY

1) Def Jam Fight For New York

2) Metal Gear Solid

3) Halo 2

4) Marvel vs Capcom 2

5) Legacy of Kain

Bonus 6) Metal Gear Solid Series, specifically Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater (This could easily be #5, it's so hard to decide)

*** Honestly, the first and most fun early shooter game I ever played, besides Golden Eye and SOCOM. GE was great, but MGS incorporated awesome stealth, epic ass story line, and I really enjoyed the 3rd person perceptive. Probably the only shooter type game I could play 3rd person, other than SOCOM. The story of MGS is really what put it ahead of either of them.

5) Super Smash Bros. Series

*** Not much can be said, if you don't know, then you will never know... nothing is better than getting drunk / high with 4 friends and brawling it out. I did this type of shit with my first since I was 13, so it's definitely one of my favorite gaming moments. Pwning nubs and destroying friendships, one KO at a time.

4) League of Legends

*** I just recently started playing this game 5-6 months ago, but it's hella legit... the depth to the game on a competitive level is insane, the meta, team fights, solo fights, everything. It's like super smash on steroids and computer. The community is awesome. I seriously just love everything about this game. First MOBA I've ever gotten into, but just wow.

3) Grand Theft Auto Series (could be tied w/ #2)

*** Seriously, need much be said? It's GTA... other than GTA:V, the story is always epic. Wasn't a huge fan of IV story-line, but all the previous stories were great and really brought you into the game. Plus, what other game do you have so much real-world freedom to do as you please in such a realistic way? Though, I'm not a huge fan of payouts and the money making system online, I'd be content playing any GTA  solo campaign until the end of my days.

2) Elder Scrolls Series

*** Seriously, nothing like Elder Scrolls... Bethdesda, this is their baby. Yeah, they have Fallout and shit, but Elder Scrolls is a fucking diamond that they'll take to the grave. It gets better and better every reiteration, the world gets better, the environment and NPCs get better, and the mechanics get better. There's nothing bad you can say about Elder Scrolls except for "dungeons being carbon copies of another," but honestly, with everything going on in the world, I never noticed it and certainly didn't care. I've put 400 hours into Skyrim on 3 different playthroughs, and I STILL find things I have never seen. The scope of their games is magnificent, and I really can't wait until the next in the coming few years.

1) Halo 2

*** Fuck you, if you truly experienced H2, you don't need an explanaition.  If you didn't experience it, then I feel sorry for you. This shit is #1 because of the experiences I had with friends and the online community. I have never felt such a close companionship to a single game or community like I did to H2.  Maybe it was because I was 13-18, but shit, I've pumped more hours into this game than any game to-date. I can't name the number of RL and online friends I played with on a regular basis and actually talked to. Online games aren't as vocal anymore, they're just not. H2, you could go into a random 4v4 game by yourself and get match with 7 other players who actually had microphones. The button glitches, super jumps, and everything else seriously just made this game the best, even though they really never intended it to be. There's so many aspects of the game, even if I explained them in ridiculous detail, you'd never get it unless you heavily played it yourself from 2004 onwards.

Crazy to think that was over 10 years ago now.... wow.

5. Pokemon R/B/Y - No brainer

4. GoldenEye - Still play it from time to time when I'm with my friend who still has it.

3. Super Smash Bros Melee - Too much fun

2. Legend of Dragoon - Favorite story mode game ever, 4 discs and way too many hours.

1. H2/3 - Had to tie these even though I think H2 is funner and better. I played H3 since the first hours it came out and had to put it at #1 with all the montages I made.

I havent played as many games as I want to, but lately I have been expanding little by little when the money available:

#5: A tie between Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.  WAIT...let me explain why. These were the first shooters to pull me slightly away from Halo because not only were more people playing them, but they were just a lot of fun before they got hacked/modded and players played REALLY cheaply. Their stories were great for military FPSs, especially MW1, and the simplicity of the gameplay for MW1 rivaled Halo. MW2 was a great game for a little while; addicting, fun, frustrating as well, but all around a good time even if it doesnt compare to Halo in any way.

#4: Trials Evolution. Its an Xbox Arcade game, but its SO MUCH FRIGGIN FUN! I didnt like the first Trials game very much, but this one EASILY got me addicted to its challenging gameplay, and when I completed a few of the really tough courses for Gold Medals, and eventually a handful of Platinums, I was very satisfied with the entire game, its slowly escalating difficulty, and the general mayhem and fun it provided for me and my brother. I played it a lot for a good year and a half I think, and although I dont really play it anymore right now, I managed to break into the Top 5% in the World on the Global Leaderboards for score in the whole game (inside the top 100,000) 6 times, and finish 6 of the main course sections with all Gold medals (only a few Platinums).

#3: Halo 2/Halo 2 Anniversary: Not a whole lot to say, because this whole forum is a Halo website, but I will say this: I didnt play it a lot when it came out, but I have gone through the campaign 3 times, twice on my own and one of those times recently on Legendary Solo. That was TOUGH. I absolutely love the gameplay, the story is great as we all know, and the Anniversary graphics are jaw-dropping.

#2: The Last of Us/Remastered: I haven't played it before, but I have seen the game on YouTube, along with the Left Behind DLC (just posted a thread about it too).  I consider it one of the Greatest games ever made. Terrific storytelling, characters to connect to and empathise with, beautiful and terrifying scenery, awesome voice acting (props to Troy Baker, and Ashley Johnson specifically, for the best acting I have ever seen in a video game...even trumps a couple of the Halo games).  Someday I wand to experience it myself.  The way Ellie explains her feelings in the middle, and pivotal, part of the game is awesome, and how Joel struggles with his grief from his past (not gonna spoil it) is something I haven't seen in games lately.

#1...drum roll........Halo 3. I have played it since Sept 28th, 2007, and i consider it the Best FPS shooter ever made for consoles. Love the story, although not powerful like TLOU, but its epic and its pivotal with the story of humanities struggles against the Covenant, Master Chief making sure Cortana is save (for now) and discovering a possible way to attempt to erradicate the Flood is all extremely entertaining. And the multiplayer...well....I cant say enough about how much I love Halo 3s multiplayer. The Custom Games, Forge, Theater...you name it.  I love it all, but I do have a feeling that eventually a Halo game in the future from 343i will have a better story, so my #1 spot is still up for grabs.

Honorable Mentions: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Halo: Combat Evolved, Tomb Raider (2013 series reboot).

Haha dude THUG...I spent so much time playing that game.

H2 pretty much annihilates everything else that would be on my list...but if pushed I guess it would look like this:

5) COD MW2
4) Super Smash Bros (N64)
3) Mario (NES, SNES and N64 versions)
2) GoldenEye 007
1) Halo 2

This is hard to list 5, damn. I'm gonna have sequels/trilogies on the list.

5. Bioshock

4. Resident Evil 2, 3, 4.

3. Pokemon Red/Blue, Leaf Green/Fire Red, Heart Gold/Soul Silver

2. Legend of Zelda : Ocarina of Time

1. Halo 1,2,3

I am going to limit my list to 1 game per series. Top 5 is really difficult.

5. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

4. The Last of Us

3. Super Mario 64

2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

1. Final Fantasy X

2. Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald

1. Halo 2

5 - Metroid Prime

4 - Paper Mario

3 - Halo CE

2 - Halo 2. I spent a significant portion of my high school years playing this game. I'll never forget all the good times I had just playing with friends and making montages. One of the best times of my life for sure

1 - Super Smash Brothers Melee. I've been playing this game casually for 13 years since the day it came out and I've been playing it competively for over 4 years and I can still play this game every day for hours on end and not get tired of it. It is an incredibly deep and technical game and there is so much room for improvement. All things considered this is the hallmark of an amazing game. The scene is alive and well and I don't see it dying for years. I recommend everyone to go buy a gamecube/Wii and start getting into the smash scene, because it's so worth it. I've seen lots of people from here (Crucifix, SirTopEmHat, Rhis, Alen) that are apart of the smash scene and they can all attest to how rewarding it is playing this amazing game.

5) Pokemon R, B, G, Y Put so many hours into these when I was younger. 4) Tony Hawk series I loved making my own maps on this game, finding all the jumps and spots. 3(CoD 4 Lots of hours logged in, the first online game I got into other than halo. 2) Halo 1 Lots of lan hours 1) Halo 2 A lot more lan hours, this game has always been a bond between friends back in high school. Some other games: Madden, Diablo, Counter Strike, Guitar Hero, Black Ops and I might have to put MLB The Show in that top 5 pretty soon, the RTTS mode is so fun.
