The technology blog neowin.net revealed that an unknown hacker had posted the details of over 10,000 Hotmail accounts on a site used by technology experts last week. The details, posted on pastebin.com, have since been removed.

Sources suggested that the blog’s report was correct and that Microsoft were continuing to work out how the security breach occurred.

Neowin.net claimed that the accounts -- which included details of Microsoft’s Windows Live addresses ending hotmail.com, msn.com and live.com -- could have been hacked or reaped in a so-called phishing scheme.

This is a process where members of the public are duped into handing over their personal details, such as user names, passwords and credit card details. Victims send the information by e-mail to people posing as banks or online stores.

Data can also be stolen by infecting a person’s personal computer with viruses and then raiding it for information.

Tom Warren, writing on neowin.net, said that most of the compromised Hotmail passwords were from Europe, suggesting that many UK addresses are amongst those that could have been breached.

Hotmail is the world’s most popular e-mail service, with around 28 per cent of “webmail” service users, according to figures from Nielsen, the internet market researcher. It is, by a considerable margin, the most popular e-mail service in the UK, where it has over 14 million users -- around 5 million more than its closest rival, Yahoo! Mail.

Social networking sites such as Twitter were abuzz with the reports, with users advising each other to change their e-mail passwords immediately.

Microsoft is the latest in a long line of big organisations, from the UK Government to major banks, who have been faced with internet security breaches recently.
