THF Videos Database: Feedback and Discussion

From: What's New at THF?

Our legacy as a Halo community has always been centered around Halo montages, and we want to not only embrace that, but build upon it. We want TheHaloForum to once again be THE place to go to find a montage, and with the brand new videos database, we hope to accomplish just that.

All registered users are allowed to submit videos to the videos section. Simply click the "Add Content" link in the user menu (top right of every page), and then choose "Add Video", or simply click the "Submit a Video" button via the Videos page. From there, fill out as much information related to the video you are submitting as possible. The more complete the data, the easier your video will be for people to find.

Once you've submitted your video, it will be reviewed by the THF staff, and if approved, will be made public to the site and will appear in the database.

Discuss the new videos section here. If you have questions about submitting a video, let us know. I hope you're all as excited about this feature as I am, it's been a long time in the making.

How do you publish the video? Or does that just mean I have to wait for it to be approved?

It will need to be approved. You can see the status of your videos by going to your user profile and clicking the "My Videos" tab. The pink rows mean the video hasn't been published yet.

I think I understood it but one thing. If you want to write a describtion  for the Video, how does this work?
Do I have to create a thread for it and then link the thread into the last bar at the submission formula?

That is correct. Basically we didn't want to change the way people shared their videos too much. So you can (and should) still make a thread for your videos that you want to share here. But then when you go to add that video to our database, you have the option of referencing the thread you made previously.

So thread first, then video. If it happens in the other order, we (mods) can always fix it later.

yes, we've kept the forum threads as the way to talk about the video, so when making a video you'd make a thread like you always do and then add it to the archive and link them. We want the forum to be connected with the new features, not be replaced by it.

Thanks for the quick reply ,here some imaginive +rep
Sooo lets say I want to add a video from back in the day so its in the archive. But do not wish to make a thread, I shouldnt have to right?  I can just add the content, get it approved,  and then it can be viewed when looking at my profile? That way theres no thread for a montage that already came out...

Correct, a thread is not necessary. I can understand if you dont wanna make a thread for old content, altho that's up to you.

Sweet. Gotta say Im pretty psyched about all this. Great work guys
God damn it my video is 1.05GB. What do :'(

I just noticed you added Phenomenon, which was already in the Archive.

I'm not allowing your addition as we dont want duplicates, try adding "Flavor" to your Aliasses in your User tab under Edit.

I dont wanna edit the original entry to FlavoRRR as it's linked to a physical file in our database.

Im not sure if alias add ons work yet tho, kinda nv1's territory.

Well figure it out
Cool idea, i'll be sure to add some of my videos up later on
Site looks incredible, will take some getting used to, but it looks great.
already told slater, but a comment/rating system on videos and articles could be sweet. especially since i don't wanna make new threads for older videos, so that would be the only way to get feedabck on those. Site looks dope though
I love how the video navigation is set up on here with the entire recent videos tab on the main page. The suggested videos from whatever game you are watching is sick too. I like the idea of having a my videos quasi-attatched to my account as well.
i feel like the video archive pages should have a release date field

Having a dedication video section is a fucking great idea. Especially being able to link to players/editors. Good job guys!

It would be cool if you could tag each video and then sort and search by tags. "100% MLG", "funtage", "jumping", "pro",  for example.

okay, so the greenish bars next to the threads mean 'new', or at least 'not yet watched', right?

edit: and is there gonna be a notification system for (new) replies (and thus quotes)? would be sweet if possible so you can keep much better track of your conversations and you won't miss out on things specifically directed at you

edit 2: wrong thread, should be in the general bugs & feedback thread..

This is a crazy good idea. People can watch your creations in a single click, just from seeing you on the forums. That's so awesome.
Yo, this site sure looks cool.
How about Marksman changing my profile picture to the one I had on the old THF? Yeah.
Yesterday my videos had the file i uploaded with them in the little box, so people were able to download it. Did that option got removed? didn't see the file next to my videos, and when i clicked on the edit button, the entire upload button appeared to be gone.
It didnt work smoothly yet for files over 200mb. Also the form we're going with of making files downloadable is still being thought on, its different than uploading to our server as downloading from the server costs us. itll be back up when we get it how we want it. dont worry we have ur files, just removed the option to dl them for now.
okay wink

I'm still seeding this for anyone that wants it

Ey Jake I was thinking, this is down the road stuff but might be really cool.

For more Forum/Video Feature integration: Every time I want to post a video on the forum that is also in the archive Im thinking if I should link the archive page (so they get the player/game/thread info) or the youtube embed. Now I was thinking what if you could embed the archive page into a post, like a youtube embed with a nice block around it with that information (editor, featuring, halo game, thread).

Kinda like how you can embed a tweet

To dare to dream: links to on-site videos and articles could even load in a collapsed/collapsible block with the url above it, automagically hotlinked and given the title of the content. Mobile could just be the link.

It's definitely something I gave a lot of consideration to during the development process. However, part of the reasons I chose to go the route that I did was that I didn't want to overcomplicate or change the way that people are used to posting their videos on THF, which is to simply make a thread, usually with a Youtube embed, some description, etc. If I add in additional fields/steps for creating a video thread, then I feel like it complicates it and at the same time differentiates it from how you make threads anywhere else on the forum.

Another part of this is that it is actually difficult for me to set up specific fields/criteria for a thread/post based on the forum it is in. It would take some work for me to say "show these fields for video threads, but not for everything else".

I'll give more thought to this though, just wanted to give you my thought process behind why I did what I did.

Right, in no way did I intend it to be any kind of requirement to post a video or video thread.

More so an option to post a youtube embed with the information in our archive around it, in a post or OP doesnt matter.

Like I tried to make up something real quick in Paint to show what I mean cuz I feel we're not 100%  saying the same thing

Fuck, if you do it like the twitter embed people could even post montages like that on other forums linking back to our site when they click the info.  But that may be thinking too far ahead.

I posted this in the vp section but in a random thread, just thought I would share it here to see what you guys think. For all the videos in the archive maybe it would be a good idea to have a report as not working button since youtube videos will occasionally get removed.

you can add videos yourself, just go to videos and Submit or hover over your profile and "add content"

Was there any response to this idea anywhere so far?
