Halo is a Game, not a Career

I'm not gonna watch a 15 minute video but I couldn't agree with the title more. People can have a better career playing fantasy football if your trying to make a "career" out of hobbies.

Each halo tournament does like what on average 10,000 to 20,000 first place? Unless it's a big one that's like once a year then like 100,000 And that's first place....

u'd have a better more trustworthy "career" working full time minimum wage job LOL real shit, and that's not even a career. Muthafuckas gtfo ur xbox and go to school, educate ur self on some real career shit that u can retire off of. halo tournaments will give u like 5 years to live off of and that's if your winning first place everytime and livn at home with your parents. I know most of these halo muthafuckas no offense to any of em I got love for my halo people 100% but I know for a fact a lot of these dudes have never even had a job and who are in their 20s still chasin that halo dream they were when they were 13 LOL like muthafuckas wake the fuck up

I didn't watch the video but the 20 seconds or so I watched looked and sounded terrible. At least get some decent equipment if you're going to make vlogs and other videos like these.
lol
lol, im sorry i don't have $1000 to throw on equipment. I just wanted to make a statement.

Mate, you can get a webcam and mic setup for under $200.
damn someone is pissed at somebody lol
I have a webcam, and I'm not to tech savy so I dont know much about stuff like that.
Better chance at being a porn star.

Speaking of education...

Oh look it's a grammar nazi. How are you today? Correct some people on the internet lately?

If somebody has a hobby and has the opportunity to pursue their hobby in hopes of making some money, why/how is it relevant to you? Who are you to judge somebody for trying to "go pro" in a video game or "make a career" out of streaming?

Listen, anybody can work a 9 to 5. Stocking shelves or flipping burgers doesn't require a special skill-set or anything that an ordinary teen or twenty-something isn't capable of doing.

That being said, I am all for having a backup plan. Attending college or having a job while you're pursuing your dream isn't necessarily a bad thing; It can only help you later on in life if your first option doesn't pan out the way you'd liked.

My advice? Stop judging others for what they decide to do with their lives and worry about your own.

Listen man. I completely understand where your coming from, but in many ways it is my business to bring this topic up. People who I used to call my friends off of xbox have been taking this shit way to seriously. I'm not talking about grinding several hours a day after school like we all once did, I'm talking about kids staying hooked on this shit to the point that they are even losing friends. One for example nearly dropped out of collage and completely lost his scholarship a few months ago during the beginning of mcc. He was grinding all day and all night and not even attending his classes. I even know one who is literally staying at his friends house grinding all night because of his tough relationship with his parents over video games. I am not saying to give up on your dreams of becoming pro. I am only addressing the 5% of Halo players who are caught up in their dream and not paying attention to the reality around them. They are ruining their future over a broken game. If you don't find that to be a problem and you think its fine to let them hurt their future over such a stupid problem weather you know them or not, I honestly don't know what to say to you. Something like this needs to be brought up because so many stupid young kids think that they can live this "dream" without even caring about their future. That is complete stupidity and it needs to be resolved. The last thing I want to see is someone I know without a career and with a terrible job at the age of 30, all because they wanted to live the dream of being pro when they were younger. Please understand that I am ONLY addressing the 5% not everyone who grinds this game.
This is 2015, why is a camera that bad of quality. Use your phone even
Didn't watch the entire video so this might be off topic, but have fun with it as a hobby until you can make enough money from it to sustain yourself. Then use whatever skills you have to promote yourself as a personality or talent to secure your income for when the game possibly fails. aint that hard, everybody does this.

Halo can be a career, not for many but for some. I mean look at some of the pros who have hundreds upon hundreds of subs (500 subs = $2500/month) + money from ads on their streams + money they get from their sponsors + donations. Money they might win at a tournament is just bonus for them and bragging rights which in turn help their stream if they perform well. Sure there isn't room for many with the small population that Halo has but its definitely possible. I think people get addicted to Halo, not necessarily think they will become successful from playing it. Halo is the face of Microsoft so they will probably keep milking the franchise until 2456.

Actually, Twitch takes half of every sub ($2.50) so, in reality, 500 subs = $1250/mo. Either way, 500 subs is a nice accomplishment regardless of the money earned. Most Twitch streamers make a majority of their money through donations and subscribers. Ad revenue is only good if you're a big streamer with thousands of concurrent viewers.

You're right, however. Halo tournaments are not a reliable source of income for pros. Even if you consistently placed 1st at every LAN event, the prize pool is too low for the amount of Halo tournaments being held. If there were 1-2 LAN tournaments per month then yeah, the $20k prize pool wouldn't seem so bad... But at the rate Halo tournaments are held, you almost have to have an additional source of income to be able to survive on your own.

I do agree though, I feel as if Halo tournaments are purely for bragging rights. Ninja, for example, makes great money from his stream (donations, subs, etc.) and he doesn't place too well at LAN events. Granted, he streams other games aside from Halo now but even when he'd just play casual matchmaking in MCC, he'd still make good money.

Streaming/YouTubing is the best route to go in terms of making money. Tournaments are just a way to get your name out there... Sad to say it, but that's kinda what it is at this point.

@Tommy Kost

Ahh ok, not too familiar with Twitch. It makes sense that they take part of the money from subs, but that's quite a lot :O. I guess it is a great streaming service though. Yeah Ninja is popular because he is a great entertainer and a respectably good player at the same time.

It takes serious grinding to be a known youtuber in the CoD communitty, do you have any idea how hard it is to relly blow up in the Halo communitty? Its less than half the size.

I have 4.5k subs and I've never revealed my personality nor uploaded very frequently. I did it because it was fun, if I had a decent personality/face (lol) I'm sure I could've been way way bigger. And if you make those kinds of videos it doesn't take you 7 hours to edit one upload, which makes it easier to upload frequently (and that's key to getting a dedicated following). Obviously you need some skill, personality and luck, but all these pros have been spoiled up until Halo: Reach. They never focused on entertaining their followers and therefore people stopped caring about them. Just look at what Kampy (and some pros joining CoD organizations) did, they got exposure from the clan/team and then they kept building up an audience because they uploaded/streamed frequently.

I refuse to believe it's so hard when I've managed to get 4.5k subs from making social montages (which not many people care for at all), and I'm not even a great player (compared to pros/Kampy/Dutchy/Hyena). It just grinds my gears when I see Halo pros complaining about a lack of income (to be fair I've stopped following pretty much all of them, so I'm not talking about everybody I guess), yet some montagers have a tenth of their subs and is more active whilst making no money. Naded and Ninja were consistent as fuck (on twitch, they could've gotten a larger following via Youtube I think) and they're doing great. They can also branch out to other games (Ninja just won the first H1Z1 tournament match or something I think) due to their personalities/following that they've created. ez pz lemon squeezy

Sorry for how disorganized my "arguments" are, just kind of rambling in the morning here.

Well said, FatRat.
Pretty much disagree with the video as a whole. People are gonna do what they want. If they want to try to be a pro but they suck at it, let them figure that out for themselves. Also in general I'd like to say that if you're going to make these videos a regular thing, try going over the topic before hand and cut it down in size because this could have been a 3-5 minute video. The camera quality/lighting was absolute shit too, like people said just using your cell phone with some better lighting would've been miles better. Anyway, not trying to hate too bad, just wanted to share my opinion on the video.
not to sure if i wanted to make this a reqular thing, also tommy and fat rat you two are still not getting the idea. Im only talking about the 5% of players who take it to the extream and effect ones around them to be pro. I am sure all of us would like to be a pro gamer or big personality on Halo, but we will not ruin our lives for a broken game. Shit like that is taking it to the extream.
It not too hard if you come into the scene with a positive, forward thinking personality. That is what people want to hear about. If you come in doing anything else, you will face some critizim but no one ussually critizes someone who is nice and just doing gameplays and montages. We need shit like that so why will anyone try to hurt it?

I have lost a lot of respect for the majority of pros over the years who complain about the game not getting attention, but then do nothing to grow the community. The montage makers / tutorial makers / glitch video makers / editors / gameplay video makers have done so much for this game it's insane, and most of them (I guess I can say "us") don't make jack from it. This forum is a pretty good example of how montages have kept something alive that would have otherwise died a  long ass time ago.

You posted a 15 minute long video about what you feel others should do with their lives, do you not see how this could ignite some sort of debate?

You seem like a nice kid. I believe you're a bit dense but, overall, I think you have good intentions. I'm all for creating/sharing Halo content but when you create videos like this, you come off as a negative person and as such, people naturally aren't going to gravitate towards your channel. Part of establishing a name for yourself in this community is class; Take the Suddoth twins for example, they're good Halo players but not many people respect them because they are negative and classless.

I understand that you don't want to see your friends let Halo ruin their lives but if you want to help them, reach out to them personally and offer them your perspective. There's no need to create a 15 minute rant belittling others for their beliefs/choices. Your video was unnecessarily negative and it's exactly what our community doesn't need at this point.

If you want to create content, just do it, man. Upload gameplay, montages, clips, highlights, and establish a name for yourself in this community as a solid player. Once you've built a following, you can delve into commentaries and such as people would be more inclined to want to hear what you want to say. Avoid this negative shit; It isn't doing anybody in this community any favors! People are gonna do what they want regardless, you can't change that. The only thing you're doing by releasing videos like this is embarrassing yourself and building a negative reputation for your name/brand/org.

Couldn't agree more with the last two posts.
I'm not doing this for content creation or money, lol Im a halo writer. You guys are also going way over the top on this. I made a 15 minute long video because I am concerned for my friends. I could care less about how someone else feels about my opinion. I also never brought up content creators at all. I literally just said that there are some kids I know that are literally throwing their lives away over a game. Its not just someone who grinds everyday or shows a lot of support for 343 or ESL. These are kids that are leaving friends, hurting families and developing egos that they in no way have earned. That video was not just to try to get them to realize what their doing is stupid but it was also meant to bring in more awareness around situations like this cause shit like this is what ruins our competitive scene.

You could "care less about our opinion" yet you posted your video on a message board.

Right, well, have a nice day!

Then send it directly to them.

Ask them for a camera from later than the year 2002 in return.

people shouldn't become actors/actresses then with your logic. people shouldn't apply for a job because they won't get it. there are 20 more guys trying to work at sonic so don't apply. a positive view on it would be more like.. "Not many people make it, but you should definitely try pursuing it because anything is possible in life. even if you don't "go pro," you played a game you love competitively. You met a lot of people who changed your life. & the harsh truth is, is that you will find people in your life that will down what you do and who you are. those people will talk and act like you are now, because their struggle with chasing their own dream in life has become something they feel can't be handled. I know that one day you, yourself will look back on this and regret believing that something could be out of your control. that you believed there was something you couldn't achieve."

I like how you have this entire paragraph about following your dreams, and it's about getting a job at Sonic... lmao

<3

I am doing this to put more awareness around this problem. It really scares me to see that not a lot of you find this to be such a big deal.
OMFG listen to the entire video please before any of you reply, I never said to not follow your dreams, if any of you actually watched the whole thing before critizing
, you would hear me even admitting that I used to grind this shit all the time as well. There is nothing wrong at all with having a dream and chasing it. You can be 60 years old and still want to be pro and that would be completely fine with me. What I am simply saying is that when you reach the point where you are in your room all day, you have no friends and your relationship with your parents is bad, that means its time to care about your life a little bit more. Yes actors work their asses off to be in the position they are in, but I am pretty sure most of them put their health and relationships with family and friends before their dreams. There is nothing wrong with chasing your dreams and I never even said the was anything wrong with that. All I am simply saying is that there is a limit to everything. If you push for your dreams a lot and dont see any improvement and your only seeing negative results from your family friends and education, then you should use a little common scence and rethink what your doing with your life. I really don't understand how you guys can even disagree with that. Either you guys are doing a major troll or you are still little kids inside but either way it is very disappointing that you guys cant understand where I am coming from.

Life is not a Cinderella story and dreams don't happen to everyone. Being pro is 40% skill and 60% luck and that is the bottom line. If a pro team doesn't want you than a pro team doesn't want you, its as simple ast that. It doesn't always matter how much time and effort you put into this game, what truly matters in the end is if that pro thinks your a good fit. They could care less about how much time and effort you put in, all they care about is if you can improve their team. Chasing the dream you want to chase is great, it shows that you are determined to live the life you want to live but when you take it too far, it only shows that you are so selfish that you are willing to effect your relationships with your actual friends and family just to make money off of a video game and if you dont become pro which will most likely happen, what will you do next?
